We first tasted their coffee in a regional blend built by Exclusive called Los Santos Celebration Blend. After a few visits to Girasoles, Calderón's diversified operation and lot separation gave us the opportunity to explore featuring coffee from a single farm. Los Girasoles has appeared on our menu over the years and we’re so excited for its return to share with our Roaster’s Pick subscribers.

Costa Rica Los Girasoles is one of the many farms owned and managed by Ricardo Calderón and his family. The community of Santa Maria de Dota sits in the renowned coffee growing region of Tarrazú. In 2009, they established their own micro mill, Los Angeles, to manage all aspects of cultivation, harvesting, and milling. They even operate their own cafe and roastery, Don Cayito.

Los Girasoles, which translates to sunflowers, sits high above the Calderón family home and Los Angeles micro mill. Coffee grows between 1,750 to 1,950 meters above sea level. Sun and shade move across the slopes of Los Girasoles, warming the thick rows of Catuai, Caturra, Typica coffee plants. Before 2008, the land where Los Girasoles sits was clear cut until the Calderón family purchased and repurposed it. Now, life is abundant through the coffee trees and Calderón's stewardship.
